Valerian Essential Oil (Valeriana officinalis)
Valerian essential oil has been used for thousands of years for its calming,
grounding, and emotionally balancing influences. During the last three decades,
it has been clinically investigated for its relaxing properties. Researchers
have pinpointed the sesquiterpenes, valerenic acid, and valerone as the active
constituents that exert a calming effect on the central nervous system. German
health authorities have pronounced valerian to be an effective aid for
occasional restlessness and sleep disturbances.* Most essential oils work best when blended
with each other. The right combination will enhance the effects and power of the
essential oils. For some basic "oil recipes", check out our Recipe page or visit

Valerian as a Sleep Aid
"My wife has been using Valerian oil as a sleep aid and says there is nothing
like it. She puts a drop on her upper chest, rubs it in with one or two fingers
and then rubs her temples and ear lobes. I decided to give it a try and couldn't
believe how soundly I slept. It was an amazing experience. If you are having
difficulty sleeping give Valerian oil a try."
Calm for Injury Shock Victim
"My husband brought my daughter inside screaming as she had just had the end of
her finger shut in a car door. He put on Lavender and I got some PanAway on it.
We were trying to get her to calm down so we could assess if her joint was
broken, but she kept up her hysterics. I tried some Peace & Calming but was
seeing no results as she was now shivering and showing symptoms of shock.
Suddenly, I remembered Gary Young using Valerian and Vetiver for pain and
surgeries and I had my oldest daughter grab it for me. I applied about three
drops of each to each foot and rubbed all over. Within 5+ minutes she was calm
and we could finally assess for a break and thankfully there was none.
Also, I expected some bruising from such an injury but there was none. I
definitely recommend having these oils on hand for emergencies especially with
children!"
