Wintergreen Essential Oil (Gaultheria procumbens)
Wintergreen Essential Oil has a sweet, minty scent. It contains the same active
ingredient (methyl salicylate) as birch and is beneficial in massage for
soothing head tension and muscles after exercising.* Most essential oils work best when blended
with each other. The right combination will enhance the effects and power of the
essential oils. For some basic "oil recipes", check out our Recipe page or visit
our Essential Oil Blends store for some outstanding "Ready-Blends", created by
Young Living.
Body Systems Affected: Muscles and Bones
Uses: Wintergreen essential oil may help with
acne, bladder infections, cystitis, dropsy, eczema, edema, reduces fevers,
gallstones, gout, infection, reduces discomfort in joints, kidney stones,
draining and cleansing the lymphatic system, obesity, osteoporosis, skin
diseases, ulcers and urinary tract disorders.
Wintergreen essential oil is known for its ability to alleviate bone pain. It
has a cortisone-like action due to the high content of methyl salicylate. For
nerve and tissue pain, use Relive-It essential oil blend.
French Medicinal Uses: Rheumatism, muscular
pain, cramps, arthritis, tendonitis, hypertension and inflammation.
Historical Uses: Wintergreen essential oil has
a strong, penetrating aroma. The American Indians and early European settlers
enjoyed a tea flavored with birch bark or wintergreen.
A synthetic methyl salicylate is now widely used as a flavoring agent in "Root
Beer", chewing gum, toothpaste and more. It is a fact that the true Wintergreen
Essential Oil is produced in such small quantities (compared to the very
extensive uses of the synthetic version), that those desiring to use Wintergreen
Essential Oil for therapeutic uses should verify the source of
their oil to ensure that they have the true oil and not a
synthetic one.
Properties: Analgesic, anti-inflammatory,
anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, disinfectant, diuretic, bone
stimulant and warming.
Aromatherapy Effects: Influences, elevates,
opens and increases awareness in sensory systems.
How to use: Diffuse. Apply to
Vita Flex Points and directly on area of concern. Apply topically on
location and use only small amounts. Dilute with V-6 Mixing Oil for larger
areas.
Safety: Avoid during pregnancy. Do not
use for people with epilepsy. Some people are very allergic to
Methyl Salicylate. Test a small area first for allergies.

Earache solved
"My boyfriend started having an ear ache and I grabbed my reference book and
learned that wintergreen is good for that. I rubbed wintergreen all over and
around his ear making sure no oil went into his ear as recommended. The next day
he told me his ear felt good! I am so pleased to learn this and wish I knew
about the power these essential oil have on us."
Bursitis
"My eldest son was having some pain in his left hip. the intensity increased in
pain over a couple of weeks and was limiting his movement (and being an avid
rugby union player this was not a good thing!). Finally we went to the Doctor
who prescribed steroids and physio to help with the possibility of surgery. Well
this was NOT going to happen to my son, so I consulted the desk reference. WOW,
with just the one application of Wintergreen on his hip, Zac felt immediate
relief. After a couple of applications over the next couple of days his pain was
zero and movement perfect."
